Elizabeth Masterson (Reese Witherspoon) is a dedicated doctor who rarely has time for a romantic life. Even when a friend sets her up on a date, she somehow fails to show up. David Abbott (Mark Ruffalo) is an artist, who moves into a furnished apartment, on a month-by-month lease. Why the original renters were so secretive about the circumstances of the occupancy seems clear once David begins seeing Elizabeth’s ghost. He tries to get her to leave, as an apartment this nice in San Francisco doesn’t come up every day. She tries to get him to leave, because after all, this is HER apartment. She is also unconvinced that she is dead.
